So you’re ready to redecorate but you may not know where to begin. It’s important to first understand that your space must be a reflection of you and those that live with you! Your home is the place you go at the end of a long day, a trying time or when you want to gather with those you love. There is no wrong or right answer in your design process…just an initial understanding and discovery of what you like.
Step 1. Get Inspired
I find it useful with a client that is starting from nothing to troll Pinterest, Google or Houzz to see what you love. Don’t think about it too much. Don’t worry about what you like or why. Do not stress if there seems to be no rhyme or reason to your results. For now, just have fun window shopping the online world for looks you love. If you’re feeling like you need a LITTLE structure you could narrow your search by selecting a room to focus on, but don’t be too limiting. This is supposed to be fun!
Often times I find that my clients are drawn to a particular store or websites style (think Serena & Lily or Pottery Barn, for instance!). These websites can be great places to start for inspiration if you already have been stockpiling that companies catalog on your coffee table! Once you start working on your design, though you’ll definitely want to personalize the space by NOT shopping from just one resource!
Save your selections to a board inside of whichever platform you’re using. Don’t want to see ads? Think about saving your selections on a Trello board Google Keep type platform.
Step 2. Look for Design Themes
Once you feel like you’ve got a lot of things you love, NOW go through them and figure out what you loved about the space. Did you love the open airy feel or dark moodiness? Are you drooling over velvet textures or preferring more tailored fabrics? What about lighting? Were you drawn to gorgeous chandeliers and lamps or did you prefer a simpler, more low key aesthetic. Whatever it was you loved, make a note of it!
Step 3. Create Your Design Concept
Now create yourself a concept board! For each space you love create a single board. For this, you can use a program like Google Slides or Power Point or try out Canva! Save and crop the images you loved from the preceding exercise and add them to the appropriate board. You should start to see some themes emerging and a “look” that is all yours coming together.

Save these boards! Maybe screenprint and save them on your phone. They can be a great resource to keep in mind if you’re out shopping and see something you THINK might work – check your board and see if it’s going to fit in.
Working with a pro? These boards will be a great bouncing off point for giving your project some direction. A little “design focus” can go a long way in creating a design you’ll love and that loves you back!
