I feel the same way about window coverings as I do about earrings—naked without them. While window treatments are not always essential (unless they are for privacy), a room can feel bare and underdressed without them, like wearing flip-flops to a formal event.
Adding window treatments also softens the acoustics, reducing sound from bouncing around the room. I can’t recall the last time I completed a design project without discussing—and almost always installing—window coverings. So let’s dive in!”
Option 1: The Sleek and Timeless Appeal of Roman Shades
A Roman shade is such a good go-to basic. They can be super clean, spare, and simple or jazzed up with a bit of trim. The current trend for Roman shades leans towards a very clean, unfussy look. Roman shades are my typical solution when a homeowner hesitates about adding window coverings.
Roman shades offer the perfect balance—they bring fabric into the space without overwhelming it. Room-darkening fabric can be added to the back if needed. They can also be installed purely as an accent, serving as a modern take on a valance.
Option 2: The Modern, Minimalist Charm of Roller Shades
Yes, folks, roller shades are back! But they aren’t your grandma’s roller shades that sprung up at the most inopportune times. Today’s roller shades have impressive fabrics, colors, and textures. Some of them feature pretty patterns and black-out or light-filtering options. They have a relatively low profile at the top of the window and provide privacy.
Option 3: The Elegant, Elongated Look of Drapery Panels
Bringing us to Drapery Panels! Frankly, nothing frames a window, IMHO, as beautifully as a well-tailored drapery panel.
So when to use what? If you don’t have a lot of opportunity for a bold pattern? Your draperies are a great place to have a little fun. If you don’t have a great view but wonderful light, consider getting a textural sheer fabric. It will allow the light to come in but block out glare and hide a less-than-stellar view. If you live in a cold climate or perhaps your windows aren’t as thermally up to date as you’d like, you might consider a velvet or other heavier fabric to keep out the winter chills (or hot sun!). Guaranteed, there is the perfect panel for you!
