We’ve all experienced that fun, exciting thing called…moving! However, we’ve all had to deal with the other side of moving, the hard, annoying part that drives people crazy! You and I know that moving is anticipated and dreaded at the same time, so how can we take the later part away?
As a designer and stager, I’ve moved more times than I can say; for myself and for clients! But that means I’ve learned some things along the way and have some tips that will make moving a little easier for you! I’ve also included a link at the bottom to a week by week check list to make your move THAT much easier!
Sounds good, right? Let’s get started!
Tip 1: Measure Twice, Move Once
A common issue when moving is fitting your current furniture into your new home. A way to ensure a smooth moving experience is to get the dimensions of the new home. This includes measuring entries and doorways to guarantee your furniture fits into the desired rooms.
That way you can measure your furniture and know for certain whether or not that sectional that you love will fit in the new family room. If it doesn’t fit donate it or sell it and forget about packing it in the U-Haul! Dodged that!
Tip 2: What about Food?
As you’re thinking about furniture, area rugs, curtains, and everything else that’s coming with you, something that slips people’s minds is your pantry! Have a plan for your food! Dry food is easy to store and move but what about the items in the refrigerator. An easy way to deal with all that food is to plan ahead!
Plan meals that will utilize the food in your fridge. You can look up fun recipes that will use as many of your ingredients as possible! Then you can put those meals in individual tupperware if you plan on packing your dishes early. Wow, great idea right?!
Or have a moving party and try to make everything that’s left in the fridge! Your friends can give you a hand with the move AND with your overstuffed fridge! REMEMBER: Check expiration dates on all of your condiments and throw things away that are expired!
Tip 3: Keep a Shower Kit
Remember that you like to shower, smell nice, and have clean teeth… a big tip is to keep a shower kit/bathroom kit while you’re in the packing process! Bet a lot of people forget about this kind of stuff…Instead of putting everything for the bathroom in a box, keep the items you need handy in a separate bag or shower basket so they’re easily accessible. Genius right? You can make a shower kit for each member of the family or have one catchall if it’s easier!
This way you can have everything that you need ready to go while you’re moving and after you’ve moved into your new place! No more having to dig through boxes for your shampoo and toothbrush!
Tip 4: To Do List
You might think this means a To-Do list for the entire time frame of the move…that’s in a link below! This is a To-Do list for the DAY OF! Remember, you’re still living your life the day of the move. That means you might need to pick up the dry cleaning, or pay your utilities. Whatever these “trivial” items are write them down!
If you write down your To-Do list for moving day that means less stuff rolling around in your brain, less stress, and no loose ends! Phew, doesn’t that feel better?!
The Big Check List!
I hope these tips have been helpful and enlightening! You can’t know until you know, right?! The last thing that always helps me when I move is a comprehensive checklist. I’ve searched through a lot of them online and I found one that I absolutely love!
I hope all of this makes your move a little easier and helps you focus on the exciting adventure you have ahead of you!
