Anyone who has ever worked with me knows that right after lighting, window coverings are always my favorite thing to recommend!
Why? I think most folks overlook the need for these. If they don’t need privacy, window coverings are often discounted as unnecessary. Not true!
Window coverings, window treatments, curtains, draperies, window dressings – whatever you want to call them, can add so much to the overall design of your space. Why? Read on!
Tip #1: Look at Your Lighting
First, beyond privacy, do you need light-blocking window coverings? You may want light-blocking coverings in your bedroom if you’re a light sleeper. You’ll need a slightly heavier fabric, like a thicker woven or even a velvet.
You’ll want the panels to be lined and perhaps even inter-lined. Take a look at hotel curtains the next time you’re away from home. Most hotels have what we call “black-out curtains.” These are designed for a good night’s sleep.
Don’t forget about other spaces as well. A TV room with sun glare or a room that gets either hot morning sun or late afternoon sun will benefit from light protection.
Tip #2: Consider the Elements
Speaking of those hot windows, window coverings can also help protect you from the heat and your furniture from getting sun-bleached.
And if the weather is cold, curtains can also offer a thermal barrier from chilly temperatures. Drapery panels will cut down on any echo-y acoustics in your space, but they will also add to the overall “coziness” of your room.
Tip #3: Choose Your Curtain’s Style
And then don’t forget style! Not just for practical reasons, but draperies will elevate and complete the overall style of the room. A drapery treatment mounted up high will elongate the height of the window, and drapery panels that run wide can fool the eye into feeling the room has large, more expansive windows.
Going for a more lux look? You can puddle your drapery on the floor (just a bit!) or have them finish just a hair above the floor for a more tailored look.
Regardless of your style and needs, there is almost always a drapery style that will suit you.
If you’re ready for a professional to help you pick the perfect curtains for your windows, let’s talk! We’d be delighted to help.
