So, you want to join the cool kids and hire a pro to help you decorate your house??? Kidding! Well, only sort of :). I think it IS sort of cool to decorate your house, and I’d love to help you, but I’m the first to acknowledge that hiring for this is not for everyone. The big question is…is it for YOU? If not, that is totally okay.
Let’s dig in and find out whether you’re a good fit to hire a professional to guide you through the process…
1.) Can You Communicate Your Vision?
The biggest question? Can you articulate what you want? Can you be super clear about what you hope to accomplish in your home decor project? You do NOT need to figure out how to get there. That is what you’re hiring a professional designer for. But any design pro will need some direction and guidance to make sure we’re getting you the outcome you’re hoping for.

2.) Do You Have a Budget & Can You Be Patient Through The Process?
Do you have a budget in mind? And most importantly, are you prepared and willing to SHARE that information? I often hear from skeptical clients that if they share their budget, they’re afraid the designer will spend.
This is completely true. We will. And that is WHY you’ve hired us. If you tell us a low number, we’ll do our best to come in low and will do you a disservice by showing you products that are beneath your level of taste and expectations, and you won’t be satisfied.
On the other hand, if you give us an unrealistically HIGH budget and we source products that you cannot reasonably afford, we’ll get you excited for products that won’t work with your price point. You’ll end up disappointed and feeling you’ve “settled.”
Can you be patient? A custom design project takes time. There is a learning curve while the client and designer get to know each other. This is an extremely important part of the process as we are building up trust.
3.) Are You Ready to Delegate or Prefer To Be Hands-On?
Are you a good delegator, or do you prefer a hands-on approach? Designers are professionals hired to execute your vision rather than shopping buddies!
In our practice, we DO offer what we call Field Trips, where we meet with our clients at various showrooms where there are a lot of items on display, but in general, this is where the learning curve and the trust come into play! There are definitely options available for the homeowner who prefers a more hands-on approach.
