Putting the Room to Work
Guest rooms often languish as the space where stuff gets lost. We store old clothes, random boxes and half-finished projects. My guest room is no different. The closet is (was!) full-to-overflowing, the secretary houses my collection of small Wedgewood – which is safe and fine but doesn’t really show it off very well.
Mostly this is a pretty space that Sophie calls her own. That would Sophie. My prissy Siamese cat who rules the space.
Sewing Room?
I am not too much of a seamstress. Yes, I know how to sew. I’m of a certain age where I learned this in school, but I also studied fabrics and tailoring in college a bit. (yea, it was a thing). Anyway, I’ve always just plunked my sewing machine down on the dining table or at my desk. However, if you’re a seamstress, you know that sewing sort of overtakes the space it lives in.
I purchased a “portable” sewing table (link here, in case you’re interested – Amazon of course). This little room (did I mention it is REALLY SMALL) does NOT have the room to have this table set up all the time so my original intent was that it live in my home office. I even fixed the space so it could (read more here). But in the end, I really don’t want sewing clutter competing with design clutter.
AND since we don’t have guests too often, it makes sense to have this in the guest room. Remember that final third of the closet? Enter my new sewing space.
Practical, Organized and Efficient
The space is not large – it is literally one third of a closet afterall. But it IS well organized. And of course, I had to make it kind of cute. But also functional.
The sewing table fits perfectly, the shelf above has cubbies for all the notions and supplies, but best of all, when not in use? I shut the door and it’s completely hidden from view.
An Easy Solution
This was such an easy solution, it doesn’t really need too much explanation. Here are the pictures of the space once complete.
I included a cute little vintage art piece I love. I added direct lighting and that is a clear iPad holder on the wall. If I want to have a little television while I’m sewing or simply play some music softly (I often sew at night), I have this ready for the iPad or my phone. (link to this). The bins are clear, but labeled. All organized with extra stuff tossed.
I haven’t used it yet, but did I mention I’ve got pillows to make for this project??? So I’ll be testing it soon!
If you need additional space in your home, search out places like this. WHERE you can reclaim a dead space in your home? Start by looking around for places where clutter lives! That will be your best place to start to find more space.
