Whenever I share what I do for a living, I invariably hear how it must be so fun to shop all day and get paid for it. To be clear, my job IS fun and helping people make their home warm, welcoming and special is rewarding but it’s also so much more than shopping!
1. The Knowledge & Expertise of a Specialist
Before we can ever start the shopping process, a designer must first analyze both the needs of the homeowner but ALSO understand the needs and restrictions of the structure itself. It’s wonderful to long for an open concept floor plan, but understanding if your home can even accommodate it, is the trick!
And each client type has their own needs. For example, a home with small children requires stain resistant fabrics that don’t compromise style for durability. Yes, you CAN have both! Someone a little later in their life might want to consider planning for long term needs. A homeowner with diverse hobbies will want somewhere in their home to tackle whatever project motivates their relaxation!
Planning for these in advance will create a much better overall design and is definitely NOT solved by simply “shopping”.
2. Project Management from Start to Finish
The projects where I and my clients are happiest with the outcome are those that treat the project as a whole. From the planning phase, any construction, the aesthetic considerations and then YES, the shopping! When a design project is approached comprehensively, the outcome is so much better.
3. Guidance in Smart Investments for the Long-Term
A million years ago when I was in design school, lol, one of our teachers shared this little tidbit:
The most expensive design decision you make is the wrong one.
What does that mean, you may be thinking??? The sofa that was purchased without measuring the doorway! Yes, that happens all the time in the retail situation. You excitedly head to the store, but that custom made sofa, only to have it delivered and realize that due to the size of the doorway or the shape of the hall, it is NEVER going in your home.
Making smart decisions will save you time and money.
Realistically, though it’s not all about the money. Designing a beautiful home or even a space or two is an emotional investment. We spend so much time in our homes that it’s extremely important that your home be a reflection of your style, of your hobbies and of your family!
If you think your next project could benefit from an interior designer, let’s get in touch.
