I have a couple of basics that I’ve shared for years. They are not new, they are not really very unique, but they are useful if you’re interested in creating quick and cohesive interiors. Here are my basic decorating secrets:
1. The Rule of Three.
The first decorator secret is the rule of three. Unless you’re working in perfect symmetry, the eye is much happier seeing things grouped together in odd numbers. Threes/Fives/Sevens. I call it the rule of three, as three of something is less intimidating to decorate with and leaves a little more white space – or “breathing room” – in and among your treasures. A mantle covered with seven knick-knacks, can simply be overkill.
2. Three Times the color
Want to (forced to?) introduce a new color into your decor? If you’ve inherited great Aunt Mary’s beloved (fill in blank with color and article description to suit your situation!) and it’s “blank” color isn’t represented anywhere else, don’t despair! My second decorating secret sauce is to add MORE of something unchangeable to make it work in the space. Update a lamp with that color shade, throw in a … throw (blank) or pillows. Add an accent band of color to your draperies.
And if the item is really a challenge or large, paint an accent wall with a version of the color OR find a great wallpaper that will bring this previously forlorn object out of obscurity and part of the plan!
Instantly that piece that stuck will be the inspiration for your updated palette! Be sure to move the color around the at least three times (see #1!) so it feels purposeful.
3. A touch of black.
Adding black is another of my favorite decorating secrets. Almost all rooms can benefit from the grounding power of touches of black. DON’T throw one black item into a room, however. (see rule #1 & 2 above!) With black, try to think outside the throw pillow box. Black is a great metal to incorporate (and it’s not JUST for Farmhouse style!). This is also a great way to weave some consistency throughout your home. How about:
- Black door hardware
- Black light fixture
- Black accents on a lamp
- Black “objects”
4. Don’t be Afraid of White Space / Negative Space
Not every wall or every flat surface needs to be covered with stuff. Having places where the eye and mind can rest elevates your space and allows the things you do have to feel special. This is especially useful if you prefer a more modern space OR if you’re just getting started in your decorating journey.
