I’m reading… Design sponge at home by Grace Bonnie forward by Jonathan Adler
Not a professional critique, mind you. Just my personal thoughts on the book. Like most designers and design fans I enjoy browsing the digital pages of the Design Sponge blog. It’s changed a lot over the years but continues to be one the best go-to places for those fascinated by all things home interiors to visit. I wasn’t sure what I expecting with the book, but it wasn’t a third of the book to be filled with a peek into the personal stylings of so many unique homes. What a fun treat!! Good design really does run the gamut. It reminded me that good design is about reflecting the tastes, styles, accomplishments and aspirations of the people who reside there. It goes right back to my motto, that “your home should greet you with a hug at the end of the day”.
The concept for the book is an interesting one. There’s been lots of books written by authors of famous blogs. This one ranks right up there. I happen to love design sponge the blog, and I like the book as well.
The first half of the book features 2 to 4 page spreads on some pretty unique and wonderful interiors. Not what one would classify as magazine ready or perfect or sublime interiors, but unique charming whimsical and personal spaces of all of the followers of Grace Bonnie’s blog.
Rebecca Phillips InteriorThe second half of the book is a little more in keeping with the DIY mentality. It’s full of easy to accomplish some a little harder than others, but for the most part easy homes of poor projects.
Even if some or most of these ideas aren’t up your alley, I found myself coming up with great ideas as iPod through the pages of this tome.
This particular page, using silverware is curtain hooks, what’s not really my cup of tea.
However, as anybody that reads my blogs no I love a good chandelier. It made me think we can it be fun to retrofit a chandelier using vintage silver rather than Crystal? It’s that kind of thinking that books like these prompt.
And the last section of this second half of the book is heavily devoted to furniture fixup. Always to me the most valuable. With so much of our life featuring disposable items, it’s really nice to look at furniture and furnishings and see new ways that we can use them in our homes, smell them, or share them with friends and family.
