I have a secret. I don’t watch HGTV often! But, once in a while, I’ll pop in and watch an episode of Beachfront Bargain Hunt because I love a deal and the beach.
But most TV shows have minimal basis in what a design project looks like. As a result, they do a serious disservice to our clients that entrust us to deliver a real-life project. So today, I’m sharing the reality of renovations so you can feel prepared for what it actually entails…
1. Design Happens Before Demo Day
The design work starts before the demo. We begin by asking questions to find out what our client’s hopes and dreams are. Then we discuss their goals for their home. Is this a forever home, or are they keeping an eye on selling?
We allow about two months for the design process before the demo begins. If a renovation is happening, we want to have all the pieces selected, purchased, and delivered so we don’t hold up the contractor.
2. Timelines are Reasonable & Flexible
All timelines need to be reasonable and well-planned. Television shows have editors who piece the process together into a 45-minute transformation. Real people are working on your project—folks with families, car troubles, and shipping delays.
During our design projects, we do our best to make it as smooth as possible, but the truth is, it takes flexibility and patience sometimes. Your project will have real people with several jobs in addition to yours. One little hiccup and put a project on a temporary hold.

3. Transparent Investment Quotes
I’m often amused and frustrated by the budget representation on home improvement shows. For example, the design and general contractor fees are never mentioned, yet these are the principal folks in charge of successfully delivering your project to you.
Additionally, in an actual renovation, there is no product placement. Subzero will most likely not underwrite your appliance package, and Lumber Liquidators won’t care that you’ll brag about them on social media in exchange for free flooring.
All of that said, I know how enticing home improvement shows are! So if you’re curious about investing in a renovation, don’t hesitate to reach out and find out what we can do to help you be the star of your home!
